Pharmaceuticals Giant Bayer Invests €130M in Berlin

After four years of construction, Bayer has now finished setting up its highly automated new plant in Berlin to produce liquid medicines such as injection and infusion solutions and other parenteral drugs. Research and production facilities are generally separate, but the robots at this new site have the technical capability to produce drugs in any stage of development. Berlin daily newspaper Tagesspiegel reports from the press release that the pharmaceutical company invited the governing mayor of Berlin Kai Wegner to the inauguration ceremony. “This investment not only underlines their commitment to Berlin, it also strengthens our city as a proven healthcare metropolis,” he said afterwards. Bayer has spoken of its long term intention to establish the Berlin site as a global ‘Center of Excellence for Parenterals’. Stefan Oelrich, head of the company's German pharmaceuticals division, put it this way: “Bayer is investing in research and production in Germany to secure the company's future business.” Currently, Bayer employs around 5000 people in Berlin.
